{"id":9639,"date":"2025-10-01T09:56:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T09:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/camvaceng.com\/?p=9639"},"modified":"2025-10-01T11:42:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T11:42:46","slug":"cve-and-ford-improve-production-of-electric-motor-stators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/camvaceng.com\/ko\/cve-and-ford-improve-production-of-electric-motor-stators\/","title":{"rendered":"CVE and Ford improve production of electric motor stators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Electron beam welding proven to enhance stator manufacture as EV demand accelerates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cambridge Vacuum Engineering (CVE) and Ford have successfully completed a \u00a3430,000 Innovate UK-funded EB-eDrive project \u2013 proving that the manufacture of electric motor stators can be improved by utilising advanced electron beam welding.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Innovate UK\u2019s Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge, CVE and Ford demonstrated that electron beam welding can significantly enhance the quality of electric motor stators and the repeatability of associated production processes, paving the way for widespread industrialisation of the technology.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from the project could help boost the UK\u2019s production of electric vehicles (EV) and support the nation\u2019s net-zero carbon goals. Demand for electric vehicles is growing. However, several barriers to widespread adoption remain \u2013 mainly around pricing. The production of motor stators is one factor, with components requiring precise engineering to optimise performance, efficiency and durability.<\/p>\n<p>Using CVE\u2019s proprietary technology, the two partners showed that electron beam welding is an effective and reliable joining method for copper hairpin stators and that it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does not require any preparation of the hairpins, such as trimming, as the electron beam does not suffer from reflectivity issues as infrared lasers do.<\/li>\n<li>Produces welds that are strong, displaying \u2013 on average \u2013 a tensile strength six times the minimum limit.<\/li>\n<li>Allows easy outgassing thanks to the use of a vacuum environment, leading to completely pore-free welds in oxygen-free (OF) copper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bob Nicolson, CEO of CVE, said: \u201cAs automotive brands look to deliver higher performance, longer range electric vehicles at lower costs, it\u2019s clear that electron beam welding has a major role to play. We are seeing the same story play out in other industries \u2013 for example in the energy sector where electron beam welding can enhance the production of wind turbine monopiles and nuclear pressure vessels. Projects like this open the door for the commercialisation of advanced manufacturing technologies and will help the UK remain at the forefront of electric vehicle production.
